I’m Maureen Egan, the founder of Mo Bird Art, a creative venture where I explore a diverse range of mixed media artwork, including whimsical caricatures of birds, abstract pieces, and vibrant collages using watercolor, gouache, acrylic paints. My latest journey into the arts began after a career as a psychotherapist spanning from 2005 to 2022. During that time, I also served as a part-time adjunct professor and held leadership roles in a non-profit organization.
In 2016, I made the hard decision to leave full-time work due to illness. In 2022, I made another challenging decision to indefinitely step away from the practice of psychotherapy. As the majority of my work was in crisis environments, it was clear I had to address the impacts of this work on my own body, mind and spirit.
I’ve embraced my artistic practice as a means of coping with pain, anxiety and major depression. Living with chronic and complex illness deepened my understanding of art as an encounter with one’s own divinity. These experiences have propelled me into a creative direction that explores themes of transformation, connection, and the sacredness of the creative process.
The birds at the Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge in Southeast Portland, Oregon, became a source of joy and inspiration. “Bird” in my business name is a dedication to all birds, the surname “Bird” on my mother’s side, and for the way birds represent the freedom of our own human spirit.
In 2025, I’m excited to launch Mo Bird Art under my main website, Maureen Egan Creative Arts and Consulting. While my current focus is on my artistic endeavors, I envision expanding my offerings in the future to include consulting services related to death and dying, drawing on my training as a Death Midwife.
I firmly hold that art has the power to inspire, nurture, and connect humanity, and I’m dedicated to making that experience accessible to everyone. Through this work, I invite people to explore their own connections to nature and the transformative power of their creativity.
